If you play in the Hants & IOW teams, please read the proposals and feed your thoughts back to the mens and ladies captains click here to email Mark Finlayson or Liz Davies Dear Players and Officials POSSIBLE CHANGES TO THE LADIES SUMMER DOUBLES LEAGUES At the County's Annual General Meeting in December a motion was proposed reducing the number of players in a team from six to four. The rationale behind the proposal was that this would shorten the time taken to play the matches and enable some clubs to field a team which it might struggle to do were six players required.  This proposal was only in respect of the Ladies competition and was thoroughly debated with the result that it was agreed that further consideration would be given to this and options would be placed before both players and officials. After much discussion and representation from various parties a number have options have been proposed and are shown below: No changes Retaining the current format but starting at 1pm 2 pairs only 2 pairs only starting at 1pm Attempt to have one extra team in the division either on a 2 or 3 pair basis The option of retaining the current structure for the top divisions whilst revising the lower divisions was considered. However, it was felt that there were too many difficulties associated with this as some teams would still wish to retain three pairs in the lower divisions and the effects upon teams resulting from promotion and relegation. One other point discussed at the AGM was the effects upon players in the top divisions being reduced and the possibility of any new teams being recreated from the changes entering the league in a division commensurate with their ability. This was considered but it was concluded to be unworkable and unfair to other clubs. Consequently, any new teams which are created as a result of the reorganisation will have to enter in the bottom division. Whilst the proposal was only in respect of the Ladies leagues we would welcome the views of the Men's teams also.  Please can you consider these options within your club and advise your Match Secretaries and the County Office with views. The committee presented her with a cutglass bowl and thanked her for her services. Also last Sunday May 6th at her usual Spring Tournament, Anne Burrows on behalf of the members gave her a John Lewis voucher for more than 100 pounds and the Secretary presented her with a specially commissioned photo montage crafted by long standing member Malcolm Faulk. Jo was much touched by all the member's contributions and thanked them reminding them "they had not seen the last of her!" Winchester men's 6th team won the Hampshire Squash Div 3-4 knockout cup last night with a 3-2 win over Nuffield Health 2. Tim Cooling held himself together to clinch the match with a 3-1 win to celebrate the arrival of his recent addition to the family.  This rendered the number 1 string match a dead rubber, though Patrick Fisher put up a valiant effort in a 3-1 defeat. Earlier, John Titchener lost out to a youthful opponent who seemed able to retrieve the ball from anywhere, while Tim Burn's welcome appearance away from home saw him notch up a valuable 3-1 win.  Allan Hawkey, playing at number 3, won 3-0 to avenge his 3-2 defeat to the same player in the league in March. Ian Garnham, deserves special mention too - he has been instrumental in the team's successes this year, including the earlier rounds of the cup, and it was a shame that his injury kept him out of the final. Over the past few months the management committee has been considering our Club name and whether it truly reflects the main facilities and activities at the Club. Our fitness centre and studio has generated over £200,000 in income in the past financial year and is central to the ongoing viability of the Club. Much of our promotional activity is also centered on fitness. However there is no mention of fitness in our Club name or logo and the view was taken that we should change to something that included fitness. We consulted with some other clubs who had gone through the process, Chichester Racquets and Fitness and Surbiton Rackets and Fitness being two examples. Both these clubs reported positive benefits in terms of fitness enquiries and membership as a result of the change. We also looked at the costs involved and decided that to avoid legal costs and much additional work changing our rules, bank accounts etc, we would simply retain our current name but trade as "Winchester Racquets and Fitness". We have also chosen a new logo (below), again avoiding incurring potentially expensive rebranding costs by staying close to the existing logo. We will now be referring to ourselves as Winchester Racquets and Fitness in all communications (you may already have heard the staff answer the phone to that name) and over the next few weeks there will be a gradual phasing out of the existing logo on all materials as we replace it with the new club logo. Ticket Information The Club receives an allocation of tickets for Wimbledon each year from the LTA that can be passed on to any club members who would like to buy them. As a result of the high uptake of British Tennis Memberships by our members, the club has a healthy allocation of tickets available for Wimbledon 2012. Demand is of course still much higher than the number of tickets available so the Club operates a ballot and draw process to allocate the tickets to members who would like to go.   Please note the policy on ticket allocation below: •    Any club members in the ballot or draw MUST be registered British Tennis Members •    The ballot and draw is open to all our club members who are registered British Tennis Members - this extends to all membership categories and to junior members age 9 and over. A good team performance at Lee on Solent saw us pick up 17 points with a 3-2 win against a decent Lee team.  There were convincing victories for Ian Garnham, Allan Hawkey and John Titchener.  Trevor Leahy lost 3-2, but battled hard and did well to pull back two games from 2-0 down to former Winchester player Emily Heyes. Then last Sunday evening, the strategically timed fire alarm at Five Rivers just before the start of the match put us off our stride against our promotion rivals (the fire engine never did turn up!).  We lost 4-1, with the only highlight of the evening being a solid 3-0 win by Tim Cooling at number 2. Following hot on the heels of the ladies, the club would also like to hear from any of our men players who would like to represent us during the summer of 2012 and beyond. In terms of men's tennis the club currently has three teams playing in the Hampshire & IOW Leagues, four teams in the Hampshire & IOW Veterans Leagues (3 X 45+ and 1 x 55+), one team in Basingstoke Men's League together with various mixed teams in the Apsley and Sarum Leagues. These teams are in addition to sides that represent the Club at various age groups in the National Knock Out competitions. We hope that through the various contacts that we have within the Club you will have already been spotted and your availability for team tennis discussed. The team captains review those players who participate in the various box leagues and also those players who participate in the squad training programme that currently exists at the Club for new and existing players. However, we recognise that for one reason or another we may have missed you and if this is the case please contact Mark or myself. Our contact numbers are below. Ideally we would like to enter more Club sides in the various leagues especially at age group 45+, 55+ and the Basingstoke League. The initial phase of works will take around two weeks and will mean that two courts will not be available at any one time over that fortnight (note that weekends will be unaffected). Bookings will be taken on courts 4&5 only although it may be that on the day it is actually courts 6&7 that are available for play. The important thing to note is just that we will be without two of the courts during the week. There will be some unavoidable distraction and noise during the work as a result of trench digging, etc in order to prepare and install the floodlight posts. There are 18 posts in all to be installed providing 6 floodlights to each court. The positioning and quality of the lights will ensure a much better quality installation than we currently have on courts 1&2. Being at the bottom of the league, (although with games in hand), Winchester knew a win was vital to premier league survival. The match started with No.4 string Damon Chase and No.5 string Ali King taking to court looking for a good start. Damon started well taking the first 11-8 and then the 2nd 11-7. However Gareth Hall pulled one back for the visitors before Damon resumed control to take the 4th and the match with a unusual stunning backhand nick. On the other court Ali lost the first 2 games to an experience opponent Dave Williams but after taking the 3rd in a close score of 11-9 fitness began to tell. Ali then quickly despatched his opponent from then on only dropping 5 points. With Winchester already 2-0 up Phill Bull and Jon Foster took to court to try and wrap up the win. Phill lost the first quickly before racing into a 2-1 lead. Niall then pulled it back to all square setting up a nail biting finish. At 8-8 in the 5th it was anyone's game. However Phill produced the magic to take the game and match. Over on the other court there was a lot of noise and arguing going on. It was the typically heated on court battle between Jason Pike and Jon Foster. Jason took the first two 11-8 then Jon battled his way back into the match and eventually took the match 3-2 after winning all his games 11-7. Meanwhile Simon White and Alex Phillips had gone on the court in a match in stark contrast to the Pike/Foster match next door. After taking the first 11-9 a dip in concentration let Simon take the 2nd 11-5. However Alex closed out the match 11-4 11-8 to conclude a fantastic win for the Winchester 1st team. Chris Scott, Shaun Barriball and Ian Garnham all won at 1,3 & 5 respectively. Trevor Leahy and Tim Cooling lost 3-1 at 2 & 4, making it a successful evening for the odd strings! Chris Scott played superbly winning the deciding tie with a thumping, if noisy display. It was the first game the university number 1 had lost in some time and he was singing Chris's praise. For that reason Chris was player of the night. With only 2 games previously played this brought the team up just 1 point behind the rest of the pack. thanks to Trevor Leahy for the match report Winchester 7th Beat Totton 17-4 This Wednesday saw Winchester 7 beat Totton 4 in result that was completely unexpected by either team.  Top-of-the-table Totton started strongly with hard fought and well deserved wins for Mark Mortimer and Ross Shaddick at strings four and five respectively.  Next up for Winchester was Kevin Kilroy who continued his recent run of good results by pulling one back for the home team with a 3-1 win against Steve Raynsford . This was followed by talented Winchester youngster Jack Payne who played by far his best game of the season to beat Tim Nash 3-1.  At two matches a piece it was perfectly poised as Ian Garnham stepped out for the home team against Totton first string Jon Bull.The packed gallery enjoyed some excellent squash and some punishing rallies as these two evenly matched players battled it out.  Excellent retrieving by Garnham eventually saw him win the match and the tie for Winchester. Send us your reports or hand in to reception after your match in and we will publish on website and send to the local press http://www.winchestertennis.net/news/posts/2011/december/01/squash-team-reports-1-dec-2011/ http://www.winchestertennis.net/news/posts/2011/december/01/squash-team-reports-1-dec-2011/ Thu, 01 December 2011 15:08:00 WTSC http://www.winchestertennis.net/news/posts/2011/december/01/great-performances-at-belgian-junior-squash-open/ Belgium Junior Squash Open, November 2011 The Elite squad from our Club headed over to The Belgium Junior Open last month.  It is a key event in the junior calendar -not only for being a Super Series Event and as such holding valuable ranking (National and European) points, but also for being the last big tournament where everyone in the world comes together before the pinnacle of the season - The British Junior Open (2nd January 2012).  As expected it was a very strong tournament, Josh Carter who has just moved up to the under 17 age group drew a top seed from the Ukraine in the first round but gave a good account of himself in a tough 3-0 loss, he then went on to make the semi finals of the plate and played some good squash all the way through.  Tom Kirby unseeded due to lack of European tournaments came though some tough matches and ended up 5th after losing to Emyr Evans form Wales who took 2nd place overall.  Catherine Finalyson showed some good form after recent hard training and took 3rd place after beating both the UK  number 2 and number 5 as well as the German number 1.  It was a very successful trip, all players improved and now have a lot of work ahead of them before the Open at the start of January. We have been awarded a grant of £50,000 to enable us to install floodlights to the courts and also to assist with upgrading our electrical plant in order to comply with current requirements. It was particularly satisfying to achieve this award as the initiative was significantly oversubscribed with applications and we are just one of 10 projects throughout the country that have been selected for early advance approval. (The planned date for notifying succesful applicants was early January). The work is expected to be completed by end of March 2012 and the addition of four floodlit courts will greatly enhance playing opportunities for members and also give greater scope for our coaching programmme in the winter months. As a result of the installation, the floodlighting on courts 10/11 will no longer be used as there is not the electric supply capacity at the club to be able to operate what would effectively be 12 floodlit courts (includes the 4 indoor). The purpose of the tournament was firstly to give people a day of enjoyable and competitive tennis playing people they would not usually encounter.  Secondly, the tournament aimed to raise some money for Tennis First - the Tennis Charity that adds support to our very best youngsters such as Liam Broady and Ollie Golding who are on the edge of breaking into the men's tour and will be the successors to Andy Murray. Feedback suggests that the club needs to have more mix in type activities for non team players and to help integrate new members. Last summer we held an afternoon mix in which started off well  but then attendances slipped until  the session no longer happened. It was hoped that the 11AM time was more attractive to members and that it could be a really popular addition to the weekly tennis calendar. Numbers have been low recently so we are keen to see more members join in to make it a success So if you fancy a game on a Sunday without the trouble of organising partners and opponents, just come along and join in. Ideally ALL players should arrive in time for an 11am start as that way the session can be more easily organised . About 18 months ago, we were invited to get together with 5 other British clubs - The Cumberland, Queens', Roehampton, Edgbaston Priory from England and Fitzwilliam + Carrickmines from Ireland, to activate the involvement of British Centenary clubs.  The inaugural event held on September 3rd 2011, was a 6 way tournament hosted by Roehampton club.  Each of the clubs sent a 14 member team comprising a pair of 1st team men and women, a pair of 45+ men and 40+women, a pair of 50+ women and 2 pairs of 55+ men.  Our team was made up of:  Men: Tim Weir + Alex Ross, Julian Godfrey + Paul England, Mike Evans + Piers Cross, Mark Finlayson + Peter Friedmann Women: Lauren Cockbill + Rachel Whiteside, Liz Davies + Monica Finlayson, Nicki Evans + Bridget Friedmann.     Everyone played one set against their opposite numbers from each of the other clubs with finals played by the top two pairs in the 1st team groups. Winchester players kept our end up very creditably - Liz Davies and Monica winning the ladies 40+ group, Julian and Paul coming second in the mens 45+ and Mark Fin and Peter Friedmann coming joint second in the 55+ "second" category.   In the evening there was a dinner and dance, and the occasion was marked by the presence of Juan Maria Tintore, President of the Association of CTC who presented prizes and symbols of membership (Tie with logo) to our tennis chairman Phil Baker.  This event should put us in contact with the International CTC scene and we will try to set up international interaction and tournaments.  This was a noel type of involvement for many of our players and hopefully there will be competition to get into the team for the next one. Once again the Club hosted the SLAZENGER Open Tennis Tournament last week and as always, there were top players from all over the country battling for the honours. The Club was able to celebrate some home success as junior member Austin Gwilliam sealed a convincing 6-0, 6-4 win in the boys 12 & under final against Julian Robinson from Middlesex. After a glorious week with no rain interruptions it was unfortunate that the weather turned for finals day. However the  indoor courts rescued the day and all of the finals were played out under cover. Apart from Austin Gwilliam's success, Hampshire players featured in a few other finals and Winchester's Andrew Sanders did well coming runner up in the boys 14&under event. Taro Keens, another Hampshire player lost out in the final of the girls 18s to Dominique Covington from Avon in a three setter, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. Hampshire junior Ryan Golesworthy came runner up in the boys 10&under singles while in the red ball 8&Under event, Winchester's current club champion Zach Corner took the title with a comprehensive 10-1 win in the final against another Hampshire player Dean Cooper Kirby. There was only one doubles event in the tournament this year and a Winchester pair retained the title for the Club as Adam Drysdale and Josh Girling beat Matt Frost and Francis Sergeant in the final. The tennis did not disappoint either and there were some matches of high quality and excitement. After a 5 year break from the Mens Singles event, Elliott Wood showed that he still has what it takes to regain his mens singles title that he won back in 2005 and 2006. 2010 Champion Adam Drysdale put up a strong challenge with the first set going to a tie break but Elliott prevailed to win the match 7-6, 6-3. In a very exciting mens doubles match it was 2009 champions Ashtey Pauls and Charlie Dryden who came back from a set down  to win after a nail biting tie break second set. They defeated Elliott Wood and Carl Richardson 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Hannah Crawford continued her domination of the ladies singles event winning the title for the sixth year in a row. In a repeat of last years final, Hannah defeated Rachel Whiteside 6-4, 6-2. Hannah also added the doubles title to her collection. Partnering Charlotte Ames they beat Claire Coomer and Helen Eckersley 6-2, 6-1. In the Mixed Doubles, Adam Drysdale took some consolation in winning with partner Liz Davies. They overcame Monica Finlayson and Ben Jepson 6-1, 6-4 in one of the last matches of the day. Firstly as part of a successful boy's under 14's county team who scooped 3 wins against Dorset, South Wales and Devon to win the South West regional County Cup at Bath giving them a place in the National Finals. This was followed by an individual win taking the trophy in the boys under 14's grade 2 Nottingham Easter tournament which featured 48 of the countries top players. It was during the same week that Miles became the countries No 1 ranked LTA under 14's boys player . A group has just recently been set up to carry out a review of the Bar and Catering operation at the club The review group will comprise of Chairman Peter Friedmann, General Manager Billy Kerr, Bar and Catering Manager Jake Ryder, club members Richard Crawford and Jez Sykes both of whom have considerable experience in the bar and catering industry. Our Squash members have enjoyed this service for over a year now and a significant proportion of our squash bookings are made online. So we hope that our tennis members will also find the facility advantageous. In order to be able to access bookings, you will need a username and password. There have been a number of emails sent already explaining the process. These should have contained your username. If unsure about your username, just ask reception. We have a username for all members where we have an email address listed. To get a password simply click on the forgotten password link on the top right of the website page . Type in your username and click submit. You will then receive a password by email. Then you can log in to the website and change your password to soemthing familiar by clicking on the change password link at the top right of the page. The draw takes place at 7PM on Sunday and is open to all club members aged 8 & over who have signed up to British Tennis. Members can come along early and enjoy some social tennis from 4PM and there will also be a BBQ available from 6-7pm. The draw will start at 7PM and should be finished by 8PM. How does the draw work? Memebrs should go to reception where we will issue draw tickets. Please arrive by 6:45 latest to allow us time to issue the tickets. To avoid delay, we will not check on membership status while issuing the draw tickets. However all winners will be checked on club membership and British Tennis membership status before Wimbledon tickets can be issued to them. Each adult present will receive one draw ticket. Anyone who is unable to attend can ask someone to represent them. The person representing them will also be given a draw ticket with their name on it. The available tickets will be shown on a printed list so that you can track what tickets you might want should your number be called. PLEASE keep track of the tickets that are left throughout the draw so that you can make your choice of tickets quickly if your number is pulled out of the draw Tickets are available in pairs - we cannot allocate single tickets. Over 220 entrants took part in the predominantly junior event although this year saw the introduction of a top quality mens singles tournament as well. The week was rounded off with an excellent mens final match on Easter Monday morning and those fortunate to have come along and watch saw an engrossing three setter between club members Karl Grossey and Elliott Wood. Karl who had already done well to reach the final, produced some great tennis to take the title 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. The junior events run from Monday to Saturday with the red ball 8 & Under event taking place on Sunday 24th April. High pressure air equipment was used to jet out all the existing sand  and debris that has accumulated in the courts since they were laid in 2006. The process also lifts and separates the fibres in the carpet. As part of the review process, aims and objectives for the tennis programme were re-established and a revised structure identified that was considered to be best placed to achieve these aims. Central to the new structure was the creation of a new position of Tennis Manager. The new role will involve a greater amount of off-court work and the remit for the position extends beyond just managing the coaching set up. The tennis manager will be involved in the development and management of all aspects of the tennis programme at the club including internal and external competition, team tennis, social tennis and even member recruitment. The new role absorbs all of the responsibilities of the existing Head Coach position which means that the Tennis Manager will effectively replace the Head Coach role. The current Head Coach, Julian Godfrey, will however continue to be a key member of the coaching team and his coaching experience and knowledge remains an asset to the club. The structural changes will take place at the end of February and I am pleased to announce that we have appointed Alison Beard as our new Tennis Manager. Alison will officially join us on 14 March. She comes to us with over 25 years experience in tennis both in a coaching and managerial role in a range of settings.  This includes private member clubs, the commercial sector and also in a sports/tennis development environment. Chris Davies Outgoing Chairman, Chris Davies was thanked by all for his contribution to the club over the the term of his three years as Chair and Peter Friedmann was welcomed as new Club Chairman. Chris will remain on the management committee and will continue to help with the indoor court project which he has been closely involved in since taking over as Chair in 2007. Peter Friedmann Peter will also retain his tennis chairman position for the time being having just taken on that role in 2009. Helen Lane has also joined the management committee having been recently elected as the squash section chairman, Helen has been a member for a number of years and has previously served on the management committee. Another member newly elected to the Management Committee was Pete Sly. Pete is a long time member of the club and has been Club tennis captain for a number of years. I am pleased to say that as a result of the high uptake of British Tennis Memberships by our members, the club has a healthy allocation of tickets available for Wimbledon 2010. Demand is of course still much higher than the number of tickets available so the Club operates a ballot and draw process to allocate the tickets to members who would like to go. Please note the policy on ticket allocation below Any club members in the ballot or draw MUST be registered British Tennis Members The ballot and draw is open to all our club members who are registered British Tennis Members - this extends to all membership categories and to junior members age 9 and over. The Club's policy this year for the allocation of Wimbledon tickets is as follows: OPEN BALLOT 50% of the club allocation will be available through an open ballot process - there is no need to sign up for this ballot. Names will be drawn from our British Tennis Membership List and successful members will be contacted and offered a pair of tickets. This has implications both for members being able to get a court at peak times and also for accommodating our coaching programme. Following discussion at tennis and management committees it was agreed that an advance court booking procedure should be introduced. This will help members by ensuring that they know they have a court booked for play when they come to the club and avoid the frustration of turning up and not being able to get a court. The squash court bookings have been operating successfully in this way for some time. We have also adapted our group coaching programme so that any necessary coaching use of artificial grass courts will have minimal impact on members. Note that between 3:30 and 6:30pm many of the artificial grass courts will be used for group coaching leaving only two or three available for members (none on Thursdays). However, this should not have much impact on members as there is little adult use at these times anyway. We will need to accommodate some coaching on Saturday mornings on the artificial grass courts (we will also be using three courts at Peter Symonds College for the coaching programme and for junior team matches) and members cooperation is appreciated. Outside of these times there may be odd occasions where coaching will need to take place on artificial grass courts. This will be managed as carefully as possible and members' cooperation and understanding will be appreciated. The advance booking procedure will start from 8:30 AM Friday 23 April when we will be taking bookings for the following Friday. Following further review, the management committee have decided to promote the "member's special loan" arrangement that has been used in the past by the Club. Members are invited to loan a sum of money to the Club and benefit from a reduction in membership fees. Key points of this arrangement are minimum loan period of 3 years up to 4.6% reduction in membership fees i.e. up to £46 reduction on fees for every £1K loan placed with the Club * minimum loan of £1,000 maximum loan - the loan cannot be so high as to result in a reduction in fees that would exceed the value of the membership/s  - example. A loan of £20K would mean a reduction in fees of up to £920 per annum. This loan could be accepted if there were family memberships totalling at least that value but it could not be accepted if there was only one gold membership at £595 * The Club is prepared to give "up to" 4.6% reduction in fees. However if members wish to help support the Club by opting for a lower rate then this can be indicated on the special loan agreement form that is completed when lodging the loan with the Club. The contract went out to tender in January and the tender process was coordinated by the project managing company, Lee West Associates. Dove Construction were successful in the tender bid process and we are pleased to say that the tender costs are within the original forecasted costs of £800K. Dove Construction, based in Cheltenham, have worked closely with Summit Structures (who manufacture and provide the fabric frame structure) on a number of projects and are therefore very familiar with the requirements of our development. The confirmation of LTA funding has also been finalised and there is some very significant positive news to report in that the ratio of grant to loan funding has been changed. Our financial projections were based on a grant of £140K and an interest free loan of £260k. The actual funding offer that we have received is for a £300K grant and an interest free loan of £100K. This is a significant improvement and immediately reduces our annual repayments to the LTA over the 10 year payback period by £16K. The construction period is projected to last 25 weeks and we will have the courts ready at the start of October in time for the 2010-11 winter season.
